Team Formation

WINTER SEASON

Almaden Youth Basketball will form teams for all players that register, as well as recruit volunteer coaches. Winter season consists of teams belonging to three leagues - Rookie League, Divisional League, and Competitive Club League

Rookie League, 1st to 2nd Grade Teams (Nov to Feb)

  • A non-competitive basketball league for 1st and 2nd graders
  • Players learn basketball FUNdamentals in a supportive team environment
  • There is one practice per week, usually on Saturday mornings, beginning in November and continuing through February
  • At the end of the season, teams participate in an organized game
  •  Mandatory evaluations to be held in early November - to help with team placement

Divisional League, 3rd to 8th Grade Teams (Oct to Mar)

  •  Recreational league suited for all levels of basketball skills
  • Divided into Boys and Girls teams each having three Divisions
  • Division I (7th & 8th grade), Division II (5th and 6th grade) and Division III (3rd and 4th grade)
  • There are typically 2x practices per week, which start in October and continue through February of the following year
  • Players will have multiple sessions with a professional basketball skills trainer
  • Players will participate in 8-10 games on Sundays in December to February of the following year
  • Top players can Try-out for All-Star teams that will have games in March
  • Mandatory evaluations to be held at the end of September - to help with team placement

Competitive Club League (formerly called All-Net), 10U/4th grade to High School teams (Oct to Mar)

  • AAU-level Competitive teams that will start practice on October and continue through March of the following year
  • Program is designed for highly skilled players that want to play at a high level of competition - a stronger commitment is required compared to the Divisional League
  • Divided into age-based single-grade teams: e.g. 12U/6th grade girls, 14U/8th grade boys, 15U/high school freshman, etc
  • Teams will have multiple sessions with a professional basketball skills trainer
  • Teams will compete in 8+ tournament weekends from December to March of the following year - Travel required
  • Try-outs for the Club teams will occur mid-September (mid-November for High School)
  • Club players MUST FIRST register as divisional players and then will be moved to their respective Club team after the try-outs - additional fee will apply

FALL, SPRING and SUMMER 3v3 Seasons

Almaden Youth Basketball will work with coaches to help them organize teams for these seasons. Almaden Youth Basketball does not form the team; a parent/coach must bring a fully formed competitive team ready to play.
